Typing Speed Test: Check Your WPM and Accuracy (30 sec to 5 min)

How fast do you really type? Choose a test length (30 seconds, 1, 2 or 5 minutes) and a kind of text, then start typing. The clock starts with your first key. Correct letters turn dark, mistakes turn red, and your speed and accuracy update as you type. When the time is up you see your net WPM, accuracy, raw speed and mistakes, and how this compares with your personal best. Every result stays on your device, so you can watch your speed grow.

Good to know

  • Copying and pasting into the box is turned off, so results are real.
  • Do two or three tests and look at your average: one test can be up or down by a few WPM.
  • The Hard mix is closer to real office typing, with names, numbers and punctuation.

Questions

How is WPM worked out?

Typing speed is counted the standard way: every 5 characters you type correctly (letters, spaces and punctuation) count as one “word”, and that number is divided by the minutes you typed. So 250 correct characters in one minute is 50 WPM. Mistakes you leave in do not count towards your speed, and accuracy shows how many of your keystrokes were right.

What is a good typing speed?

Many people type 30–40 WPM. 50 WPM or more is fast, and above 70 WPM is expert speed. Many office and data-entry jobs ask for 35–45 WPM with at least 95% accuracy.

What is the difference between WPM and raw WPM?

Raw WPM counts everything you typed, mistakes included. Net WPM, the main number, counts only the correct characters, so leaving errors in lowers it.

Which test length should I choose?

One minute is quick and popular. Two to five minutes gives a steadier, more honest number, because one lucky or unlucky sentence matters less. Job tests are often 5 minutes.
