Typing Finger Chart: Which Finger Presses Which Key (QWERTY, AZERTY, QWERTZ, Dvorak)

Touch typing works because each finger owns a set of keys. This guide shows every key coloured by the finger that should press it, on QWERTY, AZERTY (French), QWERTZ (German) or Dvorak layouts. Press any key in the box and the guide names the finger, the row and the home key it reaches from. The table lists every finger’s keys, and the ten-question quiz checks that you remember them.

How to use the finger chart

  1. Choose your keyboard layout.
  2. Click the box and press any key: the finger and row are named and the key lights up.
  3. Read the table to see all the keys for each finger.
  4. Take the quiz: for each key, tap the finger that types it.

Good to know

  • A light, curved hand position helps: wrists off the desk, fingers gently curved over the home row.
  • After each reach, return the finger to its home key.
  • Print the page (Ctrl+P) to keep a colour chart beside your keyboard.

Questions

Which keys are the home row?

On QWERTY your fingers rest on A S D F (left little, ring, middle and index finger) and J K L ; (right index, middle, ring and little finger). Both thumbs rest on the space bar.

Why do the index fingers have more keys?

They are the strongest and most agile fingers, so each one covers two columns: the left index finger types R T F G V B and 4 5, the right one Y U H J N M and 6 7.

Are the fingers the same on AZERTY and Dvorak?

Yes: fingers belong to key positions, not letters. On AZERTY your left little finger types A (where QWERTY has Q). On Dvorak your home row types A O E U I D H T N S.
