Riddles that play with words. A bank with no money, a key that opens no door, a letter that is also an insect: each one hides a double meaning or a sound-alike word. They are written by us to be fair but not obvious. A hint nudges you the right way without giving it away, and after you solve it (or give up) a short explanation shows exactly how the trick works. Good for teenagers and adults, and for anyone learning English who enjoys wordplay.

Good to know

- Use the hint before the answer: it keeps the “aha!” moment.
Questions
Where do the riddles come from?
We wrote them ourselves for this site, with their hints and explanations. You will not find this exact set anywhere else, and new ones are added from time to time.
How does the answer check work?
Type your answer in your own words. Small differences do not matter: capital letters, “a” or “the”, plurals, spaces and punctuation are ignored, and many answers accept more than one wording. If you are sure you are right but it says no, press Answer to compare.
Why do some answers accept several words?
A riddle can have more than one fair answer, for example tap or faucet, or photo, picture or selfie. We accept the common ones.
