Learn Punjabi’s Gurmukhi script with the 35 letters of the ਪੈਂਤੀ (painti), in the traditional order from ੳ ਊੜਾ to ੜ ੜਾੜਾ. Questions
Why is there no sound?
Sounds use the speech voices built into your phone or computer. Turn the volume up and check silent mode. If one language stays silent, your device has no voice for it yet: on Android add it in Settings → Text-to-speech, on iPhone in Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices, on Windows in Settings → Time & language → Speech.
Why are ੳ, ਅ and ੲ different from the other letters?
They are the vowel bearers: on their own they do not make a consonant sound, and vowel signs are added to them to write vowels, for example ਉ in ਉੱਲੂ (owl) and ਇ in ਇੱਟ (brick).
What are the letters with a dot (ਪੈਰ ਬਿੰਦੀ)?
A dot under ਸ ਖ ਗ ਜ ਫ ਲ changes the sound to sh, kh, gh, z, f and a heavy l. They are used mainly for words from Persian, Arabic and English.
My device does not say the Punjabi letters. Why?
Many devices have no Punjabi speech voice. In that case the letter names are read in English letters (for example “kakka”), which still gives the right sound.
