Opposites for Kids: Learn, Match and Quiz (Big and Small, Hot and Cold)

Big and small, hot and cold, day and night: opposites are one of the first word ideas children learn. Each pair has two pictures and is read aloud (“hot is the opposite of cold”). Switch to Go together for pairs like lock and key, sock and shoe, bee and honey. Then play Match up (tap a word, then its partner) or the quiz (“what is the opposite of fast?”).

Questions

Why is there no sound?

Sounds use the speech voices built into your phone or computer. Turn the volume up and check silent mode. If one language stays silent, your device has no voice for it yet: on Android add it in Settings → Text-to-speech, on iPhone in Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices, on Windows in Settings → Time & language → Speech.

What is the difference between opposites and pairs?

Opposites mean the reverse of each other (open and closed). Pairs are things that go together (bread and butter). Both build vocabulary and thinking skills.

Why does “light” go with “heavy” here?

Some words have more than one opposite: light can be the opposite of heavy or of dark. The picture shows which meaning is used.
