Fast, accurate number entry is a real job skill in accounts, billing, banking and data entry. This tool trains the number pad the way it is taught: your right hand rests on 4 5 6 (5 has a bump), the index finger also covers 7 and 1, the middle finger 8 and 2, the ring finger 9, 3 and the decimal point, and the thumb presses 0. Practise each row, then all digits, money amounts with decimals and long ID numbers, pressing Enter after each one. Your result is shown in keystrokes per hour (KPH), the usual measure for 10-key tests.
loading toolHow to practise the number pad
- Choose a level: start with 4 5 6, then add the top row, the bottom row, 0 and the decimal point.
- Rest your right hand on 4 5 6 and type each number, pressing Enter after it.
- Follow the lit-up key and the finger named under the pad.
- See your KPH and accuracy, and press Next set.
Good to know
- Keep Num Lock on.
- Keep your eyes on the numbers, not the pad.
- Accuracy matters more than speed in data entry: one wrong digit in an amount can cost money.
Questions
What is a good 10-key speed?
Beginners are often around 5,000–7,000 KPH. Data-entry jobs commonly ask for 8,000–12,000 KPH, and experienced operators reach 15,000 or more, always with high accuracy.
My laptop has no number pad. Can I still practise?
Yes, with the number row at the top of the keyboard. You can also buy a small USB number pad: they are inexpensive and make number entry much faster.
Why press Enter after every number?
In real data entry Enter moves to the next box or line, so it is part of the job and is counted as a keystroke.
