Moving to France or Germany, buying a laptop with a different layout, or curious about Dvorak? Practise the new layout here before you switch your computer’s settings. Leave “swap the keys for me” on and type on your normal QWERTY keyboard: the tool turns each key press into the letter of the chosen layout, and the on-screen keyboard shows exactly where each letter now lives and which finger presses it. Start with the new home row, then words and sentences.
loading toolHow to practise a new keyboard layout
- Choose the layout to learn: AZERTY, QWERTZ, Dvorak or QWERTY.
- Keep “swap the keys for me” ticked if your keyboard is a normal QWERTY one.
- Practise the home row first, then words and sentences, following the lit-up keys.
- Read your speed and accuracy and keep practising until it feels natural.
Good to know
- AZERTY swaps A↔Q and Z↔W and moves M next to L. QWERTZ swaps Y and Z.
- Practise a new layout 10 minutes a day; your old layout stays usable alongside it.
- Numbers on AZERTY need Shift: the top row types symbols like & é " without it.
Questions
Is Dvorak really faster?
Dvorak puts the most common English letters on the home row, so fingers travel less. Some people find it more comfortable. Studies of speed gains disagree, and switching takes weeks of practice, so try it here first.
What if I have already switched my computer to AZERTY?
Untick “swap the keys for me”. The tool then takes your keys exactly as your computer types them, and still shows the layout and fingers on screen.
Does it work on phones?
The key swapping needs a physical keyboard. On a phone’s touch keyboard you can still follow the layout picture, but the letters are typed as your phone’s keyboard sends them.
