Internet Speed Test: Check Download, Upload and Ping

Find out if you are getting the speed you pay for, whether your Wi-Fi is the problem, or whether your connection is good enough for video calls and streaming. The test measures download and upload speed in megabits per second, plus ping and jitter, against the nearest Cloudflare server, and explains in plain words what your result is good for.

How to test your internet speed

  1. Close downloads and streaming on your devices.
  2. Press Start the test and wait about 30 seconds.
  3. Read the download, upload, ping and jitter, and what they mean.

  • 1 MB/s (megabyte per second) is 8 Mbps (megabits per second).

Questions

What is sent, and to whom?

The test downloads and uploads random data to Cloudflare’s speed-test servers (speed.cloudflare.com), which see your IP address like any website. No personal data is sent, and we store nothing.

How much data does it use?

It stops early on slow connections. On a very fast line it can use around 100 MB, so be careful on a limited mobile data plan.

Why is my result lower than my plan?

Wi-Fi distance and walls, other devices using the internet, and busy evening hours all lower speeds. Test next to the router or with a cable to see what reaches your home.

What are ping and jitter?

Ping is the time a message takes to reach the server and come back; under 50 ms feels instant. Jitter is how much the ping varies; high jitter makes calls choppy.

Is it free?

Completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it. Light ads keep the site running.
