Check roughly how well you see at a distance with a letter chart drawn to the correct size for your screen and how far away you sit. Size it once with a bank card, choose your distance, then cover one eye and read down the lines from 6/60 (20/200) to 6/3 (20/10). Use the tumbling E chart for young children or anyone who does not read the Latin alphabet: just point which way the E faces.
loading toolHow to use the eye test chart
- Open “Size the chart to your screen” and match the box to a bank card (once).
- Choose how far you will sit or stand from the screen (3 m works for most rooms).
- Cover one eye and read each line from the top.
- Note the smallest line you read mostly correctly, then test the other eye.
Good to know
- Use the largest screen you have, such as a laptop or TV, at 3 m or more for the small lines.
- The size you set is shared with our Online Ruler tool, so you only calibrate once.
- Press New letters to shuffle them so nobody can learn the chart by heart.
Questions
Is this a real eye test?
This is a free screening aid, not a medical test. Screens, speakers, lighting and distance all affect the result, so it cannot diagnose anything. If you notice a change in your eyesight or hearing, see a qualified optometrist, audiologist or doctor. An eye examination also checks eye health, which no chart can do.
What does 6/6 or 20/20 mean?
It means you can read at 6 metres (20 feet) what a person with standard sight can read at 6 metres. 6/12 (20/40) means you need to be at 6 m to read what standard sight reads from 12 m. Many countries require about 6/12 with glasses for driving.
Why do I need a bank card?
Screens have different pixel sizes, so a letter that is 1 cm tall on one phone is smaller on another. A bank card is the same width everywhere (85.6 mm), so matching it lets the tool draw letters at their true size.
