Digital Storage Calculator: KB, MB, GB, TB Converter and Download Time

Convert any amount of data between bits, bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB and PB, in both the 1000-based units drives are sold in and the 1024-based units computers use. See what a drive will really show, how many photos, songs and videos fit, and how long it takes to download.

How to use the storage calculator

  1. Type an amount and choose its unit, for example 1 TB.
  2. Read it in every other unit; copy any value.
  3. See what Windows and phones will show, and what fits in that space.
  4. Type your internet speed to see the download time.

Good to know

  • Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB? Makers count 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes; Windows divides by 1024 three times and still calls the result “GB”.
  • Mbps vs MB/s: internet plans are sold in megabits per second. Divide by 8 to get megabytes per second: a 100 Mbps plan downloads about 12.5 MB/s.
  • What fits is an estimate: photo, song and video sizes vary with the camera, quality and app.

Questions

What is the difference between GB and GiB?

A GB (gigabyte) is 1,000,000,000 bytes. A GiB (gibibyte) is 1,073,741,824 bytes (1024³). Windows shows GiB values but labels them GB.

How many MB are in a GB?

1,000 MB in a GB by the standard (decimal) definition, or 1,024 MiB in a GiB.

Is the download time exact?

It is the best case at your full speed. Real downloads are usually 10–30% slower because of network overhead and server limits.

Is my data private?

Yes. Everything happens inside your own browser: nothing you type or choose is uploaded to us or anyone else.

Is it free?

Completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it. Light ads keep the site running.
