Questions

When do I issue a credit note?

When the buyer returns goods, you allow a discount after the invoice, you charged too much, or there was a deficiency in the goods or service. The credit note reduces what the buyer owes and, under GST, your output tax.

When do I issue a debit note?

When the original invoice was too low: the rate was under-charged, extra quantity was supplied, or freight or other charges were missed. It increases the amount and the tax payable.

What must a GST credit note show?

Your name, address and GSTIN, a serial number and date, the buyer’s details and GSTIN if registered, the original invoice number and date, the taxable value, the rate and the amount of tax being credited or debited, and a signature. Report it in your GST return for the month you issue it, within the time limit for that financial year.
