Programmers type differently: braces, brackets, quotes, semicolons and arrows are everywhere, and they slow down even fast typists. This tool gives you short, realistic code snippets to copy in JavaScript, Python, HTML, CSS, SQL and Java. It is monospaced like an editor, and after Enter the next line’s indent is typed for you, as an editor would do it. You see your speed and accuracy, and how many symbols the snippet had.
loading toolHow to practise typing code
- Choose a language.
- Type the snippet exactly, including brackets and quotes. Press Enter at line ends: the indent is added for you.
- Mistakes turn red: press Backspace to fix them.
- See your result, then press Next snippet.
Good to know
- Learn the symbol keys by finger: ( ) are reached by the ring and little fingers of the right hand on QWERTY.
- Tab inserts four spaces if you need extra indent.
- Practise your main language most, but symbols carry over between languages.
Questions
How is WPM worked out?
Typing speed is counted the standard way: every 5 characters you type correctly (letters, spaces and punctuation) count as one “word”, and that number is divided by the minutes you typed. So 250 correct characters in one minute is 50 WPM. Mistakes you leave in do not count towards your speed, and accuracy shows how many of your keystrokes were right.
Why is my speed lower on code?
Symbols like { } [ ] ( ) ; = and quotes need the little fingers and the Shift key. Most people type code 20–40% slower than plain text, and practice closes that gap.
Do I need to type the spaces at the start of lines?
No. After you press Enter, the indent of the next line is added automatically, as in a code editor. Spaces inside a line still need typing.
Is the code copied from somewhere?
No. The snippets were written for this tool, to cover common patterns: loops, functions, classes, queries and styles.
Is my data private?
Yes. Everything happens inside your own browser: nothing you type or choose is uploaded to us or anyone else.
Is it free?
Completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it. Light ads keep the site running.
