Checkers Online: Play Draughts vs Computer or a Friend

Play checkers (draughts) on the classic 8 × 8 board with English rules: pieces move diagonally forward, captures are compulsory, several pieces can be jumped in one turn, and a piece that reaches the far side becomes a king that moves both ways. Challenge the computer at three levels or pass the phone to a friend.

How to play checkers

  1. Choose vs computer (and a level) or 2 players.
  2. Tap one of your pieces: blue dots show where it can go.
  3. Tap a dot to move. Multi-jumps happen in one go.
  4. Reach the far row to crown a king (shown with a crown).

Good to know

  • Keep your back row filled for as long as you can: it stops the other side from crowning kings.
  • Trading pieces when you are ahead makes winning easier.
  • Keyboard: arrows move, Enter picks a piece and its destination.

Questions

What are the rules?

Pieces move one square diagonally forward onto a dark square. You capture by jumping over an opponent’s piece to the empty square beyond, and if you can jump again you must carry on. Kings move one square diagonally in any direction. You win when your opponent has no pieces or no legal move.

Are captures really compulsory?

In standard English draughts, yes: if a jump is available you must take it. You can untick the rule for a more relaxed family game.

How strong is the computer?

Easy plays partly at random, Medium looks four moves ahead and Hard six. Hard is a real test for club beginners.
