Questions

Why is there no sound?

Sounds use the speech voices built into your phone or computer. Turn the volume up and check silent mode. If one language stays silent, your device has no voice for it yet: on Android add it in Settings → Text-to-speech, on iPhone in Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices, on Windows in Settings → Time & language → Speech.

Why does Chinese show pinyin instead of letters?

Chinese has no alphabet: it uses thousands of characters. Pinyin is the official way of writing Chinese sounds with Latin letters, and children in China learn it first. Each pinyin letter here comes with a simple word, such as 八 bā (eight).

How are the sounds written?

In simple English letters, with a dot under some letters (ṭ, ḍ) for the “hard” sounds made with the tongue curled back, as in Hindi and Urdu. They are a guide, not a full pronunciation course.

Which alphabet should we start with?

Start with one that matters to your family or school, or one that looks fun! Spanish and German share most letters with English, while Greek and Russian are great for spotting letters that look familiar but sound different.
