Add Page Numbers to PDF: “Page 1 of 9”, Any Position, Skip the Cover

Reports, theses, court files and printed booklets are much easier to use with page numbers. Choose where the numbers go, the style, the first number and how many front pages (like a cover or title page) to leave blank. Pages turned sideways get their numbers the right way up too.

Questions

How do I skip the cover page?

Set “Leave unnumbered” to 1. The second page then gets number 1, and “of N” counts only the numbered pages. Change “First number” if you want it to start at 2.

What does “Outside corner (books)” mean?

For double-sided printing, numbers sit at the outer edge: bottom right on right-hand pages and bottom left on left-hand pages.
